PITTSBURGH TIDBITS

Here you will find little gems about the history of the city I love and call home.

Nickelodeon

Did you know that the first Nickoldeon dedicated to motion pictures was built righ here in Pittsburgh? Founded by John P. Harris and Harry Davis, it opened on June 19, 1905 on Smithfield Street. The 95 seat venue cost a nickel per showing. The Nickelodeon derived its name from the amalgamation of the admission price and the Greek word for theater.

FROM PITTSBURGH TO HOLLYWOOD

I have always had a fascination with the 1940s and Hollywood history. Hence Case Files of Miles Ward starting in 1945 Hollywood. Imagine my surprise when researching Hollywood history I found a link to the best city in the world! Founded in 1904, Duquesne Amusement & Supply Company would eventually become Warner Bros. Pictures, Incorporated. That’s right, one of “The Big Five” got its start right here in Pittburgh PA.

Three Rivers

The Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers meet at Pittsburgh’s Golden Triangle (called The Point) and mark the beginning of the Ohio River. This unique valley is home to Pittsburgh, founded on November 27th, 1758 and named for William Pitt The Elder.

CITY OF BRIDGES

Home of 446 bridges spanning rivers and valleys, Pittsburgh is home to the second oldest steel bridge in the country (Smithfield Sreet Bridge) which also happens to be the oldest through-truss bridge in the United States.

The Smithfield Street Bridge, which spans the Monongahela River, was also featured in the opening scene of Flashdance, the Bruce Willis film Striking Distance, and Wiz Khalifa’s video Blank and Yellow.

Eighteen bridges can be seen from this aerial view of Pittsburgh!
